Cork has always played an important role in Maureillas Las-Illas Riunoguès.
In 1950, half the population was involved in the noble craft of cork-making.
To pass on this expertise, former cork makers founded the Cork Museum in 1982. Throughout your visit, you’ll learn about the technique of stripping a tree without damaging it and trace the evolution of the cork stopper from the 17th to the 20th century.
Finally, in a superb Catalan cellar dating from 1920, you’ll see that the age-old relationship between cork and wine is still very much alive today, and discover how, from a piece of cork that appears so hard and brittle, it is possible to create a work of art, a garment or a handbag...
